There are a variety of activities we can engage in to elevate along your Being Side. The basic principle of all of these strategies is that they are designed to help us rewire and upgrade our internal operating system. Such rewiring and upgrading does not come about through single, solitary efforts. They come through repeated efforts over time. I am not going to say that it is easy, but I am going to say that it is easier than we generally think. It just takes concerted focus and effort.
David Goggins preaches: “Everything in life is about repetition…Reps. You have to put the repetition in. A lot of people, they do something once and they give up on it. This is something that you have to do every day of your life… It can’t be something that you do every now and again.”
The most common start-level strategies for elevating along our Being Side include the following:
Visualization
Repeatedly, choose a goal or an obstacle in your way, and visualize achieving or overcoming it. Think about it every day. Further, as a part of this visualization, answer the questions of Why are you doing this? What is driving you toward this achievement? What is fueling you?
Journaling
Get out of your comfort zone
We all have areas in our lives where we hold limiting, self-protective beliefs. Push against those, even in little ways. This will help you come to see that you are stronger than you think, and your limiting beliefs are as accurate as you think. The reality is that you can’t become better until you face up to, push against, and rise above your fears.
Meditation
At its core, meditation is a scientifically validated exercise for your brain that involves focusing on and connecting to your breathing and your body. And, because you are human, as you meditate, your mind will inevitably wander away from your breath and body. That is ok, it is a part of meditating. The key to meditation is being able to recognize that your mind has wandered and bring your attention and focus back to your breath and body. Dan Harris, the author of 10% Happier, states that every time our mind races off and we reign it in and connect back to our breath and body, that is like a bicep curl for our brain. Of course, over time, the idea is to expand our ability to stay present and aware of our breath and body for longer and longer.
Yoga

Gratitude Journaling

Cold Plunges
This shocks our fight or flight response. The idea of purposely doing this is to, over time, enhance our body’s ability to tolerate stress and build resistance. When we shock our body’s nervous system via cold water immersion, it helps us develop the capacity to regulate when in stressful situations in our day-to-day lives.

Through my own experience, that of my family members, and that of the leaders that I coach, I have learned that our past trauma and neurological conditions (e.g., ADHD) can play a significant role in our vertical altitude. And, if we want to elevate our vertical altitude in transformational ways, we may need to directly address our past trauma and neurological conditions.
I discuss each of the following avenues in my book Becoming Better. They are all worth your greater attention if you want to do take your vertical development efforts to the deepest levels.
