I normally only do one-on-one vertical development coaching when I work with executive teams. But, every year, I open up the opportunity for people to engage in my vertical development coaching process.

Let me tell you a little bit about it. And if you are interested or have some development funds to use by the end of the year, or at the start of the year, we can navigate that dynamic effectively.

What is Vertical Development Coaching?

We have two different sides of ourselves: Our Doing Side and our Being Side.

Most people are familiar with their Doing Side and have spent the majority of their development efforts expanding their Doing Side. While this can be helpful, it is often only incrementally helpful.

Most people are not familiar with their Being Side, and thus, have never really focused on developing their Being Side. But, when we develop along our Being Side, it is not incrementally helpful, it is transformational.

Vertical Development Coaching is designed to help you do three things:

  • Learn what your Being Side is
  • Awaken to your altitude along your Being Side
  • Elevate along your Being Side

The Power of Vertical Development Coaching

Let me tell you about one of my past clients: Tanya.

Tanya’s boss came to me and asked me if I could coach Tanya. This boss told me that Tanya had stalled out, and she would either need to level up or start looking for a new job. This coaching was the organization’s last effort to help her.

At first, Tanya and I exchanged emails. At the bottom of her emails, she had several different sets of letters after her name, and a number of different badges representing different programs she was certified in.

When I first saw this, I wondered why she was in such need of coaching, given all of her credentials.

As I got to know Tanya, I quickly recognized that she had a lot of skill (which was represented in all of her qualifications). She was far out to the right on her Doing Side.

But, when I asked her why she wanted coaching, she told me that she felt stuck in her role. She had been in her role for about a decade. And, after every year not getting promoted, she would sign up for another degree or certificate program to put her in the position of getting promoted. But, the promotion had never come.

I explained to her that my coaching process was different. That I would help her work on her Being Side instead of her Doing Side.

Through this process, I discovered that, yes, she was rather skilled. But, I also discovered that she had some limiting beliefs and self-protective mindsets that prevented her from taking initiative. This was evidence that she operated from a low Being Side altitude. So, while she was great at doing her job, no one really saw her as someone who could excel as a leader.

So, over the next several months, I helped her learn about her Being Side, awaken to her Being Side, and elevate along her Being Side. The result of this effort was transformational. She elevated her confidence and her ability to take initiative, setting her up for bigger and better roles.

Something I have Discovered

We all have limiting beliefs and self-protective mindsets that hold us back from being the people that we want to be and having the impact that we want to have.

And, if we want to reach our potential, it is going to require that we invest in developing along our Being Side.

My Vertical Development Coaching Process

My coaching process is a 5-month program that involves the following efforts:

  1. Learn about your Being Side
  • This involves a couple of workshops to help you learn about your Being Side and some of the key terminology that are critical for the one-on-one coaching we will be doing.
  1. Awaken to the quality of your Being Side
  • 360-Feedback – You will put together a list of people you would like to get feedback on about your Being Side. I will compile those results and share them with you to help you more fully awaken to the quality of your Being Side.
  • Self-Assessments – I have two self-assessments designed to bring some objective information to the quality of your Being Side
  • Vertical Development Exercise – This is the crown jewel of the program. This exercise is a deep introspective dive designed to help you awaken to the limiting beliefs and self-protective mindsets that are most holding you back from your aspirations.
  1. Elevating along your Being Side
  • After identifying the limiting beliefs and self-protective mindsets that are most holding you back from your aspirations, we will craft a Personal Vertical Development Plan, tailored specifically for your needs and interests.
  • I will serve as your accountability partner for executing that plan.

In the end, you will walk away operating at a higher, more elevated level.
