How to Elevate Along Your Being Side to Become Better

Last week, I held a Vertical Development Community of Practice meet-up. And, I want to share a profound observation that came from our discussion about our Being Side.

During the meet-up we were discussing the following:

  • If our Being Side is the degree to which our internal operating system is wired for value creation as opposed to self-protection, what are common signs and signals of self-protection (e.g., defensiveness, resistance, blame, denial, lack of vulnerability, disconnection from emotions)
  • What are the different ways we can evaluate our Being Side altitude beyond my Vertical Development Framework or Mindset Framework? (e.g., level of reactivity, width of one’s window of tolerance, quality and tone of self-talk)
  • What are the different ways we can elevate along our Being Side?

It is with this third question where the profound observation occurred.

During our discussion, I shared the following slide, which corresponds with the content in my new book, Becoming Better: The Groundbreaking Science of Personal Transformation, identifying different levels of activities that we can engage in:

Upon sharing this, Maurice Thibodeau, a life-fulfillment expert, shared this interesting thought: Each of the levels seem to be connected to different systems. Specifically:

  • The surface-level strategies seem to be connected to our body
  • The deeper-level strategies seem to be connected to our mind
  • The deepest-level strategies seem to be connected to our heart

I found this to be profound because I often say that vertical development, at its most foundational level, is about healing our mind, our body, and our heart.

I don’t know about you, but I think I find it more powerful to think about vertical development through a focus on these three systems as opposed to activities at different depths.

  1. I love the shift because it focuses efforts on becoming – developing a better body, mind and heart/soul – rather than focusin gon doing something to transform our being, because that doing shifts us back to horizontal development. I agree this is a mindshift in seeing the path to wholeness. Sorry I missed that VD – COP!
